Men's Basketball Stays Hot from the Floor in Win Over BVU

Royals shoot 45 percent in 71-56 win over Buena Vista University

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Bethel University traveled to Storm Lake, Iowa Tuesay night for its second road contest of the season, taking on Buena Vista University. The Royals continued its strong shooting performance against the Beavers in a 71-56 win, dropping 45 percent of its shots from the floor. With the win, BU has won its first two road games and holds an overall record of 3-1.

In the first half BVU started the game with a 5-0 lead in the opening two minutes, however, it would not trouble Bethel, as the Royals went on an 18-2 run over the next six minutes. Within the overpowering spread, Kyle Zimmerman (So., Champlain, Minn.) led the charge with seven of BU's first 12 points. Bethel went on to capture a 38-28 lead at the half, finishing with a field goal percentage of just over 47 percent. Zimmerman finished the half with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and two turnovers.

Bethel's men's basketball squad maintained its distance in the second period behind a balanced shooting attack and a stifling defense. At one point in the second half the Royals led by as many as 15 with 16 minutes to play, yet the Beavers did not bow out. In fact, at the 7:05-mark BVU was within six and looking to close the gap even more until Kyle Zimmerman attacked the basket to draw a foul and sunk two free throws. Zimmerman's aggressive play sparked a 12-3 run that ended the game in BU's favor, securing the 71-56 victory.

The Royals found much of its success Tuesday night from the glass, out-rebounding Buena Vista 45-36. Bethel remained on fire throughout the night, carrying a field goal percentage of 45 percent, which increases the season percentage that was already at nearly 42 percent. BU also created 19 turnovers against its opponent, creating several extra scoring opportunities.

Zimmerman finished the game as the team leader with 21 points, 13 rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Zimmerman and the  BU offense found several other players contributing to the team's success, including Luke Buttenhoff (So., Watertown, Minn.) who composed 13 points and five rebounds in eight minutes of play. Daniel Baah (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) also manufactured in 11 points and grabbed four boards.

BVU was led by three individuals who each tallied 11 points throughout the competition.

The Royals will take a Thanksgiving weekend break before beginning MIAC play next weekend, as BU travels to Saint Paul, Minn. to take on Macalester College Saturday, December 3rd. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
