ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bethel squared off against nationally ranked Gustavus on an unseasonably warm day today at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex. Gustavus scored one goal with in the first 10 minutes, then added another shortly before the end of the first half for all they would need to defeat Bethel 2-0 today.
The Royals managed to squeeze off some shots early in the game, but ultimately, the #19 team in the nation was able to push back and control the ball for the better part of the game. Bethel fired 15 shots - six on goal - in the game, but was unable to erase the goose egg on the scoreboard as a result.
Meanwhile, the Gusties kept goalkeeper
Leif Sundberg (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) busy in front of the net. The senior made 14 saves on the day, including eight in the first half. Bethel's adjustments on defense were enough to shutout Gustavus in the second half.
David Kim (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) accounted for two of Bethel's six shots on goal.
The loss drops Bethel to 7-3-2 (2-3 MIAC), while Gustavus improves to 11-1-1 (4-1-1). The Royals will look to get back on the winning track when they head up to Collegeville, Minn., next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game against Saint John's.
