ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bethel entered today's game having shut out each of its last four opponents in a scoreless streak that lasted well over 380 minutes of game time. Unfortunately, that streak was snapped this afternoon in the first minute of the game. The hosting Royals were defeated by the visiting Macalester Scots today by a final score of 5-0.
Macalester's goal in the first minute proved to be all it would need to claim victory over Bethel, though the two teams played a relatively even first half in terms of shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks. Robin Forslund and Taylor Rasmussen each scored two goals for the Scots to do the majority of the damage.
Martin Manocchio (So., Austin, Minn.) accounted for three of Bethel's four shots on goal, though none of them made it past the Macalester goalkeeper.
"We are a young team and need to continue improving our mental consistency," said Head Coach
Jeremy Iwaszkowiec of his team's performance today. "Macalester jumped over some mistakes early and punished us. That's what the good teams do, and I give credit to them for putting us away early and then not letting us get back into the game. However, we're a bit disappointed in the way we came out today and need to find away to be more prepared to defend our home field."
Recent history shows that the Royals have played tough against a traditionally strong Scot team. Macalester barely defeated Bethel last season 1-0, but the year before,
Brian Holm (Jr., Champlin, Minn.) helped Bethel defeat Macalester 2-1 in overtime.
The Royals (7-2-2/2-2 MIAC) look to shake off this afternoon's setback and regroup for another MIAC showdown against another strong team in Gustavus. That game is also scheduled to be at home beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8.
