ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - This Saturday the Royals have an opportunity for their biggest success of the year when they face off against #4 St. Thomas. After defeating Gustavus 20-0 in their homecoming game, the Royals have moved up to 20th in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and
D3football.com polls.
The Royals enter the match 6-0 while the Tommies come in 7-0. These two undefeated teams are the only two undefeated teams left in the MIAC and this match will most likely determine this years conference champion. This is the best start for the Royals since they went 9-0 in 2003.
A capacity crowd is expected at St. Thomas' O'Shaughnessy Stadium which seats approximately 4,500 but has standing room for several thousand more. The record for the biggest crowd at the Tommies facility was set back in 1982 when they played St. John's in front of a crowd of 8,751.
The Royals come into this match up with the strongest rushing defense in the conference holding opponents to an average of only 12.2 point per game, and less than 225 total yard of offense per game.
On offense the Royals have been lead by senior
Logan Flannery who is averaging over 125 rushing yards per game. Junior quarterback
Josh Aakre is passing for an average of over 120 yards per game.
The Tommies come into the match up with a very balanced offense having scored 20 touchdowns on the ground and 21 touchdowns through the air.
If you are planning on attending this possibly historic matchup, kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. with tickets going on sale at 11 a.m. The game will also be broadcast by the
Minnesota Sports Broadcasting Network, providing streaming audio and video coverage of the game.
