BLAINE, Minn. - For the second night in a row, the Bethel Royals men's hockey team was dealt a deflating defeat at the Schwan's Super Rink. On Saturday evening, the Royal's hosted the College of Saint Scholastica Saints who delivered a 5-1 downer all the way from Duluth.
Saint Scholastica got on the board first with a goal midway through the first. However, the Royals would fire back quickly with a goal of their own off the stick of Tom Menozzi (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.). Menozzi's goal tied the game at one apiece where the score would stand for the remainder of the first period, as it appeared the Royals were going to potentially upset the fifth ranked Saints.
Coming out of the intermission, the Saints were quick to strike with a goal three minutes into the period to put them ahead 2-1. After the goal, Saint Scholastica never looked back and took charge of the game. They would go on to add two more goals at the half-way point of the second period to increase their lead to 4-1. Royal goaltender Zac Bush (Fr., Tyler, Texas.) did all he could to stop the potent offensive attack by the Saints as they rifled 18 shots on net during the second period alone.
Entering the third, the Royals were behind but came out strong. The Bethel's attack proved to not be enough as the Saints went on to dominate third period play, outshooting the Royals 14-6 during that time span. The Saints would go on to add one more goal to increase their lead to four and ultimately defeat the Royals by a score of 5-1. Saint Scholastica outshot Bethel on the night 44-32 with most of the shots being even until the third period.
Saint Scholastica improves their record to 10-2-2 on the season as Bethel drops their second consecutive game to move to 6-9 on the year. Bethel resumes MIAC play next weekend when they will travel Friday night to take on Hamline University at Drake Arena in St. Paul. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. as the Royals look to hold on to their footing in the conference standings.
