ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel Royals women's basketball team gave Gustavus Adolphus everything they could muster, only to fall short Saturday afternoon at the Robertson Center 60-53. The Royals and Gusties matched blows throughout the first half of play, with both defenses looking sharp. Bethel held Gustavus to a mere 22 points in the first and led going into the half 24-22.
Taylor Sheley (So., Backus, Minn.) led the attack for the Royals offense putting up 14 points in the first while adding four rebounds to give Bethel momentum entering the second half of play. Unfortunately, whatever momentum the Royals had was quickly snatched away by the Gusties when their offense came to life.
Both Molly Geske and Molly Mathiowetz paced the Gusties by scoring 11 points a piece in the second half to lead Gustavus to victory by outscoring Bethel 38-29. For the Royals, Sheley added another 6 points in the second to give her a total of 20 for the game to lead all scorers.
Kristen Wolters (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) scored seven points in the second, but it wasn't enough as the Gusties continued to put up too much of a fight for the Royals.
With the loss, the Royals drop to 4-9 on the season and 3-7 in MIAC play. The Royals take the court again Monday evening at 5:45 p.m. in Northfield, Minn., where they will take on conference opponent Carleton College.
