ARDEN HILLS, Minn.- A pair of mistakes led to two goals as Bethel came up short against UW-Superior 3-1 in their first home game.

The Royals got into a 1-0 hole when pressure in their end led to a goal less than five minutes into the game. Trailing by a goal early in the first half, Bethel's leading scorer for the past two seasons, Andreas Scott (Jr., Cedar, Minn.), came up with the equalizer in the 18th minute, assisted by Randon Sommars (Sr., Cambridge, Minn.). However, the Yellowjackets were able to strike two more times, once in the 25th minute and again in the 72nd minute. There were plenty of scoring chances for the Royals as they fired 17 shots and 14 shots on goal, and they will be looking to take what they have learned and apply it in future matches.

In what was a very physical contest, the Royals held their own against a Yellowjacket team intent on bullying them around. "They were a chippy team and it was a chippy game," said Christopher Dirks (Jr., Excelsior, Minn.), "but we got to their physical level in the second half."

The physical style also came with a price. The two teams had a combined 34 fouls, seven yellow cards, and Bethel's Michael Voigtlander (Jr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) received a second yellow card, with a subsequent red card, in 69th minute.

After the game, Coach PepeJon Chavez was pleased with his team's effort but not with the execution.
"We didn't do the little things right," said Coach Chavez, "I'm a little things coach and this is a little things team, but we fought hard throughout. "

"We have the talent," says Dirks, "we just have to keep believing."

The loss evens out Bethel's record at 1-1, while UW-Superior is now 1-0-1 in their season. The Royals play host to Norwestern College on Monday, September 4, at the Ona Orth Complex, beginning at 4 p.m.
