Carleton Plays Spoiler, Royals Fall 3-1

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Nicole Wriedt (So., Pewaukee, Wis.) had 14 kills, two digs, and three assisted blocks, but Homecoming for the Bethel Royals was spoiled by the visiting Carleton College Knights, 3-1.

The Royals jumped out in the first set 6-0, and never looked back, eventually winning 25-22. The second set went back and forth, consisting of 13 tied scores, and 7 lead changes, only to see the Royals drop the set 25-23. The Knights took control from the third set on, as they led the entire set on their way to a 25-14 win. The fourth and final set of the match again saw the Royals fight hard, but come up short as the Knights strung seven straight points together to pull away, eventually winning 25-14, and taking the match 3-1.

Kelly Otto (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) provided seven kills and four assisted blocks, while Amy Werner (Fr., Three Lakes, Wis.) added six kills of her own along with two assisted and one solo block. Betsy Naatjes (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished with five kills and also contributed on 34 of the Royals' 41 assists on the night. Valerie Smith (Fr., Alexandria, Minn.) led the Royals defensively with 20 digs.

The loss moves Bethel to 5-8 (0-3) while Carleton improves to 9-3 (2-1). The Royals will be back in action September 30 as they prepare to take on the University of St. Thomas for a 7:30 match at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn.
