Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Three possessions, three touchdowns - that's how today's game started for the Bethel Royals and they never looked back in a 42-7 win over Carleton College. Logan Flannery (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.), the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, made a strong case for repeating as he tallied 134 yards on just 17 carries, including a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown as well.

Quarterback Josh Aakre (So., Dawson, Minn.) was 15-for-20 passing for 113 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball 11 times for 50 yards and a touchdown. A majority of his rushing yards came on Bethel's third drive of the game when he had a big run of 26 yards down to the Carleton 8-yard line, followed by a five yard burst into the end zone two plays later.  His other touchdown pass was to Reid Velo (Sr., Nashwauk, Minn.), who was Bethel's leading receiver on the day with four receptions for 37 yards. Joel Quick (Sr., Johnston, Iowa) gained nearly the same number of yards with 34 on just two catches, while Gabe Kleinschmidt (So., Hastings, Minn.) gained 22 yards on four receptions.

Defensively, the Royals limited Carleton to just 162 yards of total offense, and only a net of 29 of them coming on the ground as Bethel defenders forced the Knights to lose 65 rushing yards. Nathan Voronyak (Sr., Orono, Minn.) led the way with six tackles, including 2.5 for losses of 12 yards and a sack for nine yards. Billy Morgan (So., Rosemount, Minn.) also had six tackles, as did Ross Petterson (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.), who also had a tackle for a loss of 12 yards and a fumble recovery for six yards. However, it was Keith Doten (Sr., Maple Plain, Minn.) that put a big hit on Carleton's starting quarterback deep in their own territory, forcing a fumble that allowed Eli Donatelle (So., Park Rapids, Minn.) to come along and scoop up the loose ball and run into the end zone for a five-yard touchdown for Bethel's final score of the game.

The win gives Bethel a 2-1 record overall and a 1-0 conference record, while the Knights fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the MIAC. The Royals are scheduled to take on Concordia-Moorhead next Saturday at 1 p.m. for the annual Homecoming game at Royal Stadium. The Cobbers lost to Saint John's today by a score of 31-19.
