CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bethel Royals got back on the winning track with two wins today, both by the score of 4-2. In both games, Bethel used a big inning to score the majority of their runs and then relied on good pitching and solid defense to preserve the wins.
Against Frostburg State, the Royals scored one run in the top of the second inning thanks to an RBI double by newcomer
Lynnae Thompson (Jr., Stewartville, Minn.) to bring in co-captain
Karina Roe (Sr., Grey Eagle, Minn.), who led off the inning with a single.
After Frostburg State came back to tie the game in the bottom of the second, Bethel took the lead for good in the top of the fourth by scoring three runs. Highlights of the inning included a double by
Lisa Patnode (Jr., Princeton, Minn.) and a triple by
Lauren Habisch (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.).
Rebecca Akerson (So., Lakeville, Minn.) went the distance for the Royals, giving up just one earned run on six hits in seven innings. She struck out five batters while walking just one, giving her 21 strikeouts in as many innings pitched.
Against the UMass Boston Beacons, the Royals rallied to score four runs in the sixth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and take the lead for good. Bethel got RBI singles from Patnode, Habisch, and
Ashley Johnsen (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) in the inning, giving pitcher
Charitey Rowden (Jr., Shellsburg, Iowa) all she would need to earn the victory for the Royals.
With the wins, Bethel is now back at .500 with a 5-5 record. The Royals are scheduled to play two more games tomorrow beginning with a game against Babson College at 3:30 p.m., followed by a game against the Franciscan University of Steubenville at 5:30. Both start times are Eastern.
