MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. - The Bethel Royals knew they needed a win tonight in order to have any chance whatsoever of earning a fifth consecutive MIAC playoff berth and Brad Peterson (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) must have known how close he was to reaching 100 career points. Well, there's an old song titled, "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," because while the Royals did beat the St. Thomas Tommies 6-3 and Peterson did reach 100 career points, Bethel will not be in the postseason this year.

Bethel's effort tonight, though, made them look like a team that belongs in the playoffs. Kyle Dynan (Jr., Orono, Minn.) put Bethel on top 1-0 three-and-a-half minutes into the game on a power play goal, assisted by Mason Swenson (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) and Peterson, who entered tonight's game with 97 points.

At 17:48 in the first, Chris Fiala (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) extended Bethel's lead to 2-0 with the help of Kent Bostrom (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.). A minute and a half later, Peterson scored the first of his two goals, aided by Bostrom and Drew Dammen (Fr., Sun Prairie, Wis.). So at the end of the first period, Bethel enjoyed a 3-0 lead.

Do you think they were done? Not a chance.

The Royals began the second period on a power play and Swenson helped the team capitalize on it with his fifth goal of the season. Bostrom and Peterson were both credited with assists on the goal, which put Peterson at 100 points in his career in a Bethel uniform.

The Tommies finally answered at 2:44 into the second period when Rob Johnson scored the first of his two goals in the game.

But then Bostrom put Bethel back on top by four goals at 16:40 in the second, assisted by Fiala and Peterson. Almost a full period later, Bostrom and fellow senior John Kovacs (White Bear Lake, Minn.) found Peterson, enabling him to score his second goal of the game and earn his fifth point of the game, a personal best. Bostrom also had five points for the second time this season, and he finishes his career with 117 total points, which is good for ninth all-time at Bethel. Peterson finishes his career with 102 points, which is good for 17th.

St. Thomas managed to score twice in the third period, but by then, Bethel had already established a healthy lead and the Royals went on to defeat the Tommies for the first time since the MIAC Playoff championship game at the end of the 2006-07 season.

Bethel fired off 45 shots on goal compared to 34 for St. Thomas. Aaron Damjanovich (Jr., Remer, Minn.) stopped 42 of those shots for his 39th career win. He needs just four more wins to surpass All-American Doug Voss to become Bethel's all-time leading goalie in wins.

The Royals close out their season with a 12-12-1 record overall and an 8-8 record in the MIAC. St. Thomas advances to the conference playoffs with a record of 9-5-2 against MIAC opponents and 12-10-3 overall.

Along with Bostrom, Kovacs, and Peterson, seniors Eric Adams (Litchfield, Minn.) and Brent Kettelkamp (Richfield, Minn.) also ended their collegiate playing careers in tonight's win.
