Box Score

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel Royals were picked to finish second in the MIAC preseason coaches polls. Lo and behold, they finished second with a 64-51 win over the visiting Carleton Knights today at the Robertson Center gym. Bethel had finished in a tie for second place in the MIAC standings twice previously in the early and mid-1980's, but this marks the highest the team has ever placed outright since joining the conference in the late 1970's.

In the first half, the two teams played to a 33-33 draw. Both Tim Madson (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn.) and Mike Moberg (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) racked up 10 points to account for a majority of Bethel's scoring. The Royals then turned on the defense in the second half to limit the scoring power of Carleton's all-time leading scorer in Zach Johnson. While he had 14 points in the first half, Bethel limited him to just nine points, which represented half of the Knights' points in the latter 20 minutes.

Madson would go on to finish with 20 points, giving him sole honors as Bethel's fourth highest scorer in school history. Moberg finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, giving him his 10th season double-double, and first in the last two weeks of play. Cory Laugen (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) also reached double figure points with 12, pulling down three rebounds, grabbing two steals, and aiding in a pair of baskets as well.

In addition to Johnson's 23 for Carleton, Seth Jonker finished with 13 points as the only other Knight to earn double digit points.

With the win, Bethel closes out the regular season with a 19-6 overall and a 14-6 conference record, which is the best since the 2001-02 team went 21-6 overall and 15-5 in the MIAC. Carleton drops to 16-9 overall and 12-8 in conference play. The Knights are now the #5 seed and will take on Augsburg in Minneapolis next Monday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Royals will play the highest seed remaining from the first two playoff games next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Robertson Center. At the moment, there are no plans for advanced ticket sales.
