Box Score
MINNEAPOLIS - Nothing comes easy, especially when playoff seedings are at stake. For the second game in a row, Bethel played an emotional and physical game, and again the winner's margin of victory was just three points.Today, the Bethel Royals outlasted the Augsburg Auggies, one of the four other teams they were tied with for second place at the beginning of the day, winning 56-53 thanks to some key offensive rebounds and a pair of made free throws by
Cory Laugen (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) with 10 seconds remaining. Laugen was Bethel's second leading scorer with 12 points - seven of them coming from the free throw line.
The two teams played a very even game in the first half, with the Auggies holding a 31-30 advantage at the midway point. In the second half, the Auggies opened up a nine point lead, forcing the Royals to come from behind. Bethel tied the game with just a minute remaining and took the lead for good on a #Nate
Robertson# (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn. - pictured left) free throw with 45 seconds left to play. Robertson's second free throw was no good, but the rebound was grabbed by
Mike Moberg (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.), one of his nine on the afternoon. The Royals maintained possession and after a missed jumper by Laugen, it was
Tyler Brown (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) who helped Bethel keep the ball with another offensive rebound, forcing Augsburg to foul. After Laugen's free throws, Augsburg had one last chance to tie the game, but after the ball went out of bounds,
Tim Madson (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn.) intercepted the in-bounds pass to seal the victory for the Royals.
Madson finished today's game with 16 points and three steals. Robertson had Bethel's closest bid for a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
As the score would suggest, the two teams played a very even game, with neither team holding a substantial advantage in either shot percentage or rebounds. However, the Royals only turned the ball over 11 times, while the Auggies gave Bethel the ball back 17 times, leading to 16 points compared to just eight for Augsburg.
The win keeps Bethel in a tie for second place with Carleton College at 12-6. The Royals close out the season against the Knights next Saturday, with a game against Gustavus in between, starting at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday night at the Robertson Center. Bethel's 17-6 record is also good for second best overall among MIAC schools, while Augsburg falls to 13-10 with the loss.
