ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – After stumbling out of the gates to start the MIAC season, the Bethel Royals men's basketball team, picked up a big win Monday night in the Robertson Center. The Royals defeated the Macalester College Scots 73-55 to earn their first conference victory of the year.
The Royals came out strong in tonight's game, jumping ahead early and never looking back. The potent Bethel offense put up 39 points in the first half to take a 13 point lead into halftime.
Greg Meyer (Fr., Brooklyn Center, Minn.) led all scorers in the first with 11 points in only eight minutes of action. Meyer was a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc as he finished the first half shooting 100 percent from the field.
Chris Vavra (Sr., Cambridge, Minn.) would also chip in 8 points to aid the Royals cause.
Bethel started off slowly in the second half, but finished with a flourish as they would once again outscore Macalester in the half, 34-29. This time, it was Vavra who would spark the Royals. Vavra finished the half with seven points while
Rob Lang (Sr., Johnston, Iowa) would add four points and three rebounds with some stellar defense played along the way.
Vavra finished with 15 points on the evening, leading all Bethel scorers. Meyer would go on to finish with 14 points, while Lang,
Nate Robertson (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.), and
Daniel Baah (So., Farmington, Minn.) all finished with eight points apiece. Robertson also dominated the glass tonight for the Royals, finishing with a team high nine rebounds in his first game back after being sidelined with an injury.
Paul Richie and Kyle Hamblett led the Scots with 15 points each.
The Royals look to use their momentum from tonight's win as they take on Crown College and Martin Luther College later this week. After a slight hiatus due to Christmas break, the Royals will continue MIAC play on Saturday, Jan. 2, when they will take on Concordia College at the Robertson Center.
