ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - A quick scoring start by Crown College proved to be the only lead they gained as the Bethel Royals came back to defeat the Storms 71-51.
The Royals gained the lead less than five minutes in when Zak Mathson (Fr., Cambridge, Minn.) made a key layup. With a duplicate layup by
Nate Robertson (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.) 12 minutes in, the Royals started a healthy lead. By the end of the first half, Crown would watch the Royals sink bucket after bucket until the half ended with Bethel on top 37-25.
Chris Vavra (Sr., Cambridge, Minn.) led the charge in the first half with 11 points, while Robertson contributed 10, and
Rob Lang (Sr., Johnston, Iowa) and
Daniel Baah (So., Farmington, Minn.) both gained four points for the Royals. Mathson, and
Zach Hurd (Jr., Portage, Mich.) pulled down three rebounds each.
Starting the second half, the Royals skillfully kept their lead of 11 points or more over the Storm. By the 10 minute mark, the Royals played even harder, leaving Crown in a final dust of 71-51.
Vavra, similar to the game against Macalester, was the leader in the second half with nine points, including a three-pointer and two rebounds. Robertson followed with six points, while Baah had five. Lang and
Greg Meyer (Fr., Brooklyn Center, Minn.) also contributed four points each in the second half.
Vavra led the team in points with a total of 20, with Robertson also contributing a total of 16. Meyer and Robertson tied for top rebounds in the game with eight.
With this win, the Royals are now 4-3 overall. Their next game is scheduled for Saturday against Martin Luther College, starting at 3 p.m. in the Robertson Center.
