ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - On Senior Day, the Bethel Royals tactically picked apart the Augsburg defense, cruising to a 44-6 victory over the Auggies. Today's win gives the Royals 12 straight victories against Augsburg College.
Joel Quick (Sr., Johnston, Iowa), nominated to play in the D3 Senior Classic, put the finishing touches on an outstanding season, hauling in four catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns. For the year, Quick tallied 930 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns.
Quarterback
Josh Aakre (So., Dawson, Minn.) had an outstanding day as well, completing 13 of 21 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns. Along with his stellar day through the air, Aakre racked up 69 yards on the ground, including a big 21-yard scamper part way through the second quarter, setting up a Royal touchdown by
Dusty Wahl (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) three plays later.
Logan Flannery (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.), 120 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown, reached the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the third straight year. He also caught two passes for 20 yards and another score. Wahl put together a strong game for the Royals, rushing for 52 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns, including a punishing 32-yard run early in the fourth quarter. His two touchdowns today gave him nine for the season.
On defense, the Royals were equally as dominating. After allowing the Auggies to score on their first drive, the defense was stifling for the remainder of game. They allowed just 220 yards of total offense, while holding Augsburg to 3 for 19 on third down conversions.
Billy Morgan (So., Rosemount, Minn.) led the Royals with eight tackles, five solo and three assists, while
Jared Lyle (Sr., Elgin, Ill.) garnered seven tackles, along with a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Two of Lyle's tackles came on a goal line stand half way through the third quarter. The Auggies drove the length of the field, getting a first-and-goal from the Royal one-yard-line, but were unable to crack the Bethel front line and were stopped on four consecutive plays. Linebacker
Nathan Voronyak (Sr., Orono, Minn.) made four tackles, but it was his forced fumble that was scooped up by
Joey Hofmeyer (Sr., Hospers, Iowa) and brought back 25 yards for Bethel's final score of the game.
After the win, Bethel finishes the season with a 7-3 record, 6-2 in the MIAC, and Augsburg ends at 4-6, with a 3-5 conference record.
