ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bethel defeated visiting the visiting Simpson College Storm 3-2 in overtime, thanks to a goal by
Brent Neihart (So., Prairie Village, Kan.) five and a half minutes into the sudden death extra period.
After a scoreless first half, Simpson drew first blood with a goal less than six minutes into the second half, scored by Chris Allen. Three minutes later, Bethel answered with a goal from
Brandon Peplinski (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) off of a header from
Kirk Darling (Jr., Portage, Mich.).
With the score now 1-1, the Storm came raging back at the 74 minute mark with a goal from Lucas Haack to regain the lead. But thankfully, the Royals stayed poised and answered back with a goal from
Zach Hurd (Jr., Portage, Mich.) from Neihart and
Andreas Scott (Jr., Cedar, Minn.).
Neither team could find the back of the net in regulation, though there were goals on each side called off due to offsides or other circumstances. Now in overtime, and the momentum in Bethel's favor, Neihart fielded a cross and slammed it into the goal, with assists going to Scott and Peplinski, giving the Royals their second overtime victory this season.
Nick Kantor (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) made eight saves on 10 shots on goal, while his counterpart made six saves on nine shots on goal. Simpson committed 13 fouls to Bethel's seven, and also received two yellow cards to Bethel's one.
The win gives Bethel an overall record of 9-4-2, while Simpson falls to 5-5-2 on their season. The Royals are scheduled return to conference play with a game against Gustavus this Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
