OSHKOSH, Wis. - Not even 48 hours removed from their first conference win of the season, Bethel kept it's momentum going with a pair of wins on the opening day of the UW-Oshkosh Titan Tussle. The Royals defeated Illinois Wesleyan 3-2 (
(25-16, 17-25, 25-18, 27-29, 16-14) and Luther College 3-0 (
28-26, 30-28, 25-19).
Against Illinois Wesleyan, Bethel had four players earn double digit points, led by
Nicole Wriedt (So., Pewaukee, Wis.) with 22.5 points on 20 kills, a solo block and three block assists. The kill total is a season high for the opposite hitter.
Kelly Otto (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) and
Amy Werner (Fr., Three Lakes, Wis.) each had 10 kills, but it was Otto's play at the net that helped her earn 14.5 points as Bethel's second highest scorer. She had a solo block and five block assists, not to mention a service ace to help the Royals. Werner also had a solo block and a block assist.
Betsy Naatjes (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) ran the floor by providing 45 out of Bethel's 48 assists in the five set match.
If the five sets it took to defeat Illinois Wesleyan drained Bethel at all, it didn't show ... much. Two of Bethel's three sets against the Luther Norse went to extra points, but the Royals eventually prevailed in straight sets. In this match, it was Werner who led the team with 17 points on 13 kills, a solo block and six block assists. Werner has steadily emerged as a strong presence at the net for the Royals and is averaging nearly a block per set. Wriedt also finished with double digit points, tallying 11.5 on 10 kills and three block assists.
Kate Smith (So., Arden Hills, Minn.) recorded a majority of the assists with 38, giving Naatjes a rest.
The wins help Bethel improve it's record to 10-13 overall, giving the Royals one more win than all of last season with six matches left to play. The Royals are scheduled to take to the court again tomorrow beginning at noon against conference opponent St. Thomas, followed by a bout with the #1 team in the nation and host UW-Oshkosh.
