ST. PAUL, Minn. - Bethel's 8-7 come from behind win on Friday night proved to be too tough of an act to follow. The Royals and Hamline Pipers faced off against each other again tonight, 24 hours after the two teams combined to score 15 goals in one game. However, the Pipers ended up on the winning end of another high scoring affair by defeating the Royals 6-1 at Drake Arena.
At first, it looked as though Bethel was going to pick up where they left off the previous night as
Kyler Moje (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) scored his second collegiate goal at 6:33 into the first period with the help of Tom Menozzi (So., Lakeville, Minn.) and
Jake Kogler (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.). Unfortunately, it proved to be the only goal of the game for the Royals as Hamline went on to score six unanswered goals.
Hamline's Chris Berenguer erased Bethel's 1-0 lead at 11:21 of the first period, and little improved for Bethel from that point on. Joe Long had two goals and an assist, while Andrew Birkholz and Steve Festler had a pair of assists for the Pipers in their scoring attack.
Hamline's defense allowed just 13 Royal shots in the entire game and was able to successfully thwart each of Bethel's six power play opportunities, whereas the night before, the Royals were 4-for-5 while skating with a man advantage.
The loss drops Bethel to 9-9-1 overall and 5-5-0 in the MIAC. The Royals have one series sweep, and have been swept once, but aside from that, they have split the season series against their other three conference opponents thus far. Bethel currently sits in fifth place, just four points out of second place in the standings with six games remaining. With the win, Hamline improves to 11-5-1 overall and 6-2 in the conference, which is good for third place. The Royals are scheduled to remain on the road for their next game as they travel down to Winona to take on the Saint Mary's Cardinals at 7:05 p.m. next Friday.
