Box Score
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -
Tim Madson became the fifth leading scorer in Bethel basketball history today by scoring 33 points, surpassing both Andy Gilbert (1999-03) and Dave Blanchard (1977-80) on the all-time points list. Unfortunately, it would not be enough as Bethel lost to the visiting Augsburg Auggies by a final of 81-76.
Bethel was forced to play catch-up for nearly the entire game, trailing by as many as 13 in the first half before narrowing the margin to just four points at the half, down 38-34. The Royals earned a 71-70 lead with just over 2 minutes left to play, but were unable to build upon it, and eventually succumbed to the Auggies down the stretch.
Madson's 33 points is a season high, and his six rebounds tied for the team high today. The starting guard was 10-for-20 from the floor and made 12 of his 13 shots from the free throw line. He began the season in 10th place on the all-time scoring list, but has eclipsed five of the players in front of him in the last five games, bringing him to 1,511 points in his career.
Mike Moberg (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) bounced back from a scoreless game against Gustavus to score 11 points, grab six rebounds, and block two shots today.
Cory Laugen (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) continued his strong play by scoring 11 points and recording four steals. Laugen is averaging better than 13 points per game in the team's last five games.
Despite the loss, the Royals were encouraged by the return of
Nate Robertson (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) to the court. Robertson was forced to leave the Gustavus game early due to injury and was doubtful for today's game. While he did not start, he did eat up 19 minutes of game time and scored four points and had three rebounds and a steal.
The two teams made the same number of field goals, but the difference was where they were from. Augsburg drained eight of their 19 three-point shots, while Bethel was only able to sink two of their 14 shots from behind the arc. Matthew Quammen of Augsburg led the three-point brigade by making four of his eight shots to finish with 23 points. Nate Alm was the Auggies leading scorer with 33, while Jon Cassens contributed 15 to the cause.
Bethel's record falls to 10-4 overall and 5-4 in the MIAC with the loss. Augsburg improves to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference. The Royals are scheduled to travel to Northfield, Minn., to take on Carleton next Monday at 7:45 p.m. for their next game.
