ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel Royals had their five game winning streak snapped by the #2 team in the nation on Wednesday, but this afternoon, they made it clear they have every intention of starting a new streak by defeating the St. Olaf Oles 81-72 at the Robertson Center gym.
After the first 20 minutes of the game, Bethel held a 35-29 edge thanks to 11 points from
Cory Laugen (Sr., Blaine, Minn.), as well as seven points and seven rebounds from
Mike Moberg (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.). St. Olaf made just a third of their shots from the floor in the first half, while Bethel made more than 45 percent of theirs.
The second half saw Bethel build upon their lead, but St. Olaf lingered long enough to make the Royals stay aggressive. In the end, Bethel triumphed by having four players reach double figures for points. Laugen led the way with his first 20 point effort of the season to bring his season average back above 10 points per game. Moberg earned his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Tim Madson (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn.) became a factor in the second half as he scored 11 of his 16 points in the final 20 minutes.
Tyler Brown (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) contributed 14 points to the win, giving him an average of 11 points per game in his last three.
Nate Robertson (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) had a team high three blocks in addition to eight points and six rebounds.
Bobby Fong was the game's high scorer with 24 points in 35 minutes of play, but he was to be the only Ole in double figures. The Oles made just five of their 23 points from beyond the three-point arc and finished with a 38.8 shooting percentage. Meanwhile, Bethel made 43.5 percent of their shots from the floor and 19 of their 23 free throws.
The win helps Bethel improve to 10-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference, while St. Olaf drops to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in the MIAC. The Royals are scheduled to travel down to St. Peter to take on Gustavus Adolphus for their next game which is slated to tip off at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.
