Royals Fall Short in Home MIAC Opener

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team dropped its MIAC opener to the College of Saint Benedict, 3-1, Wednesday evening at Ona Orth Athletic Complex.

After Saint Benedict scored twice in the opening 16 minutes, the Royals answered in the 24th minute. Kendall Craigan found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, with Elisabeth Rupp and Taylor Sievert picking up assists on the play to pull Bethel within one at 2-1.

The one-goal margin held through halftime before the Bennies added to their lead early in the second half, scoring in the 51st minute to make it 3-1.

Bethel continued to create opportunities despite the deficit, generating 10 of its 11 shots in the second half. The Royals finished just three shots behind Saint Benedict, 14-11, while putting three attempts on goal.

Sievert led the Royals with three shots, while Hannah Kvant, Jessica Oliver and Rupp each recorded two. Bethel also earned four of its five corner kicks in the second half.

Autumn Maki made four saves in 70 minutes of action in goal for the Royals. Abby Wright played the final 19 minutes without allowing a goal.

With the result, Bethel moves to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in MIAC play.

Up Next: Bethel remains at Ona Orth Athletic Complex Saturday for Senior Day, hosting Concordia-Moorhead at 1 p.m. The Royals will honor their senior class prior to kickoff.
