Royals Open MIAC Play With Road Sweep of Pipers

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Bethel University softball team swept Hamline (DH) on the road by scores of 10-2 (6 Innings) and 11-3 (5 Innings) at Meredith Field on Tuesday.

The Royals, who push their win streak to four games, open MIAC play with a 7-13, 2-0 MIAC record. The Pipers fall to 3-15, 1-3 MIAC.

Bethel 10, Hamline 2 (5 Innings) (Game One)

A six-run fifth inning for the Royals came courtesy of Abby Otterness's RBI double, Sidney Bartels's two-run triple, Ellie Baker's RBI single, and Kate Kurz's two-run single that closed the game's scoring. Those six runs were enough to secure a mercy-rule victory by a 10-2 (6 innings) margin.

Eight-of-nine Royals starters recorded a hit.

Otterness finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI, one stolen base, and two runs scored. Bartels's two triples made up her 2-for-3 performance that also resulted in two runs scored, two RBI, and one sacrifice fly. Each going 2-for-3 with one double were Lucie Voight and Molly Closser. 

Bethel finished the contest with 15 hits, while starting pitcher Dominique Walicke allowed eight hits, two runs (one earned), three walks, and notched two strikeouts over 6.0 innings to secure a complete-game win for the Royals.

Bethel 11, Hamline 3 (5 Innings) (Game Two)

The Royals pounded 19 hits and scored in every inning except the third frame, which locked an 11-3 victory.

The Pipers came up with just five hits as Royals pitcher Brianna Tix surrendered all five of them hits, as well as three runs, one walk, and notched seven strikeouts over 5.0 innings of a complete-game win.

Eight-of-nine BU starters recorded a hit in the contest. Of those eight individuals, seven of them had multiple hits in the contest.

Camryn Thurow and Sidney Bartels each finished 2-for-4 with one double and two runs scored.  Putting the exclamation point on the game was Abby Otterness, who closed the game's scoring with a three-run home run in the fifth inning that made the score 11-3. Otterness's 3-for-4 performance resulted in three runs scored, and five RBI. 

Greta Stanek was 2-for-3 with one double, one run scored, and one RBI. Going a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish was Voight, while Mandalyn Franks was 2-for-4.

The Royals will travel to Saint Benedict (DH) tomorrow, Wednesday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m.
