Royals Sweep Cardinals to Remain Undefeated in MIAC Play

ARDEN HILLS, MINN.—The Bethel University baseball team prevailed with a home sweep of Saint Mary's (Minn.) by scores of 2-0 and 11-5 at Hargis Park on Tuesday.

The wins move Bethel to 16-5, 6-0 MIAC, while Sant Mary's falls to 14-9, 2-2 MIAC. The Royals, who've now won 11 of their last 12 games, are the lone MIAC team to remain undefeated in conference play.

Bethel 2, Saint Mary's 0 (Game One)

The Royals recorded just two hits in the contest. One of them came from Drew Girtz, whose fifth-inning double scored Chris Lavin and Seth Nelson to give Bethel a 2-0 lead. Lavin and Nelson reached on a walk, which set up Lavin's two-run double.

Chris Cannon, who had the other Bethel hit, went 1-for-3.

Eric Stomberg pitched 5.0 innings for the Cardinals. He allowed just two hits, two runs, three walks, and notched two strikeouts in the winning decision.

Drew Girtz allowed just two hits and had seven strikeouts over the first 4.1 innings pitched before Cavan Banks surrendered just one hit and tallied three strikeouts over 2.0 innings in relief, which locked him the win. Jay Krieger picked up the save, throwing the final two outs.

Bethel 11, Saint Mary's 5 (Game Two)

Bethel had 10 more hits on their stat line from game one to game two, where they accumulated 12.

Three of them were home runs, as Oran Hinkle's two-run home run in the eighth inning highlighted his 4-for-5 outing that resulted in four RBI, four runs scored, and one stolen base. Chris Lavin's solo home run in the fourth inning made up his 2-for-3 performance that consisted of three runs scored, one RBI, and one walk. 

Sam Abbas, who was hit by a pitch, was 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and a hit by pitch. Finishing 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one stolen base was Oran Hinkle. Rounding out the Bethel multi-hitters was Hayden Sperbeck, who was 3-for-5 with one run scored, and one RBI.

Jackson Hunter tossed the first 7.0 innings for Bethel. He allowed, nine hits, three runs, one walk, and had four strikeouts in the winning decision. Zach Johnson and Aiden Eckert pitched the eighth and ninth innings in relief for Bethel.

Leading Saint Mary's at the plate was Ryan Csida, who was 2-for-5 with one home run. Also hitting a home run was Reese Berg, who finished 1-for-4.

The Royals will make the short trek to Macalester (DH) on Wednesday, April 8 at 2:30 p.m.
