ARDEN HILLS, MINN.—The Bethel University baseball team swept Augsburg (DH) by scores of 13-8 and 10-9 at Hargis Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Royals improve to 14-5, 4-0 MIAC, while the Auggies fall to 1-7, 0-4 MIAC.
Bethel 13, Augsburg 9 (Game One)
A four-run third inning, and a seven-run fourth inning dug Bethel out of a 2-0 deficit and gave them enough cushion in a 13-8 victory in game one.
The Royals accumulated 12 hits in the contest.
This included Seth Nelson's MIAC-leading eighth home run of the season, a fourth-inning grand slam. That highlighted his 2-for-4 outing along with one run scored. Reaching base in all four plate appearances was Chris Cannon, who finished 2-for-2 with one double, two runs scored, two RBI, and two walks. Hayden Sperbeck, who registered a two-run double in the fourth inning, went 2-for-4 with one run scored, and three RBI. Rounding out the multi-hit Royals was Ben Trucke, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI, and one walk.
Eight-of-nine starters contributed a hit for Bethel.
The Royals' pitching staff allowed nine hits. Starting pitcher Mark Anderson surrendered seven hits, seven runs, three walks, and notched one strikeout over 5.0 innings of work to secure the winning decision. Tanner Nordrum and Cavan Banks combined to allow two hits, one run, one walk, and tally three strikeouts over the final 2.0 innings in relief.
Stanley Regguinti paced Augsburg at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing that included one double, two runs, and one RBI.
Bethel 10, Augsburg 9 (Game Two)
Bethel found themselves down 7-2 after the fourth inning. They battled back and forced three lead changes over the final three innings. BUÂ grabbed their first lead of the game at 8-7 off Oran Hinkle's sixth-inning RBI double that scored Hayden Sperbeck. The Auggies responded with a pair of seventh-inning runs to regain a 9-8 advantage before Bethel knotted the game at 9-9 off Drew Girtz's double that scored Hayden Bradford, and secured a 10-9 win off Seth Nelson's go-ahead home run n the eighth inning.
Augsburg had runners on first and third base in the top of the ninth, where the game ended on a base runner interference on a failed double play attempt off Drew Jenkins' ground ball.
Bethel had 11 hits compared to Augsburg's 16.
Drew Girtz finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, one stolen base, and one hit by pitch. Chris Cannon went 2-for-5 with one double and one run scored. Seth Nelson's MIAC-leading ninth home run highlighted his 1-for-3 performance, and two runs scored. Oran Hinkle went 1-for-3 with one double, one walk, one stolen base, and two runs scored.
Ted Hohn, Jay Krieger, Zach Johnson, Brandon Witter, and Jackson Hunter pitched for the Royals. Johnson, who entered the game in the sixth inning, allowed nine hits, two runs, and had two strikeouts over 3.0 innings to earn the winning decision. Jackson Hunter allowed no hits in the ninth inning, which earned him the save.
The Royals will travel to Macalester (DH) on Friday, April 3. Start time is set for 2:30 p.m.
