ARDEN HILLS, MINN.—The Bethel University men's tennis, softball, and baseball teams picked up victories during their spring trips on Tuesday, March 17.
SOFTBALL
Bethel split a pair of games at Mary Hardin-Baylor (DH), dropping the first game 6-2 and winning the second contest 3-2. The Royals move to 3-7, while the Crusaders end the day 11-11.
Mary Hardin-Baylor 6, Bethel 2 (Game One Box Score)
Abby Otterness surrendered six hits, six runs (two earned), three walks, and notched six strikeouts over 6.0 innings of a complete-game pitching effort. She also contributed at the plate, where she drew three walks and scored a run courtesy of Greta Stanek's two-run single in the seventh inning. Stanek and Camryn Thurow, who also scored on that play, each went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Julia Helget finished 2-for-3 for the Royals, who out hit the Crusaders 8-6 in the contest. Sidney Bartels recorded Bethel's lone multi-base hit as she went 1-for-4 with one double.
Bethel 3, Mary Hardin-Baylor 2 (Game Two Box Score)
Five Royals recorded one hit in the contest highlighted by Abby Otterness's 1-for-4 outing that included one double and one run scored, and Sidney Bartels' 1-for-3 performance that consisted of one double. Mandalyn Franks, who went 1-for-3, had Bethel's lone RBI when she knocked in Abby Otterness with a single in the fifth inning.
Brianna Tix allowed six hits, two runs, three walks, and recorded six strikeouts over 7.0 innings of a complete-game pitching effort for Bethel. The Crusaders outhit the Royals 6-5.
Bethel will face Southwestern (DH) in Georgetown, Texas tomorrow, Wednesday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
BASEBALL
Bethel defeated UMass Boston 8-5 in their first game before they dropped a 12-3 decision to Worcester State in their second contest in Orlando, Florida.
The Royals move to 4-3 following Tuesday's split.

Seven Royals contributed a hit. Five-of-nine Bethel hits in the contest were doubles. Oran Hinkle finished 2-for-4 with one double, one run scored, and one RBI. Sam Abbas kept that trend going with a 2-for-3 outing that included one double, two runs scored, and one walk. Also scoring two runs were Drew Girtz and Hayden Sperbeck, who each recorded a single at the plate.
Chris Lavin's 1-for-4 outing consisted of a three-run double while Chris Cannon and Carson Christiansen each went 1-for-5 with one double and one RBI.
Roman Lachenmayer, Jay Krieger, Brandon Witter, and Cavan Banks combined to allow 12 hits, five runs, and notch 14 strikeouts on the pitching mound. Six of those strikeouts belonged to Krieger, who allowed just one hit over 3.2 innings in relief, which earned him the winning decision.
Worcester State 12, Bethel 3 (Box Score)
A six-run fifth inning, and a five-run eighth inning powered the Lancers over the Royals.
Both teams combined for nine errors in the contest, six of those belonged to Bethel. The Royals' offense produced five hits, led by Chris Cannon's 2-for-4 outing that included one run scored. Sam Abbas was 1-for-4 with one RBI, while Carson Christiansen was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Ted Hohn, Aiden Eckert, Brady Schmidt, and Owen Mortimer combined to allow nine hits and notch six strikeouts on the pitching rubber.
MEN'S TENNIS
The Royals notched a pair of 7-0 victories over Illinois Wesleyan and Webster at the Fort Gatlin Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
The sweep moves Bethel to 11-1.
Bethel 7, Illinois Wesleyan 0 (Box Score)
The Royals swept doubles behind victories from Dylan Magistad/Carter Sheard 6-2 at No. 1, Zack Chaffey/Watson Sheard 6-3 at No. 2, and Micah Gustafson/Zach Bengtson 6-2 at No. 3.
Carter Sheard cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1, while Magistad was victorious 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. Watson Sheard grinded out a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) win at No. 3. Prevailing at No. 4 singles was Zack Chaffey, who won 6-4, 6-2. Rounding out the Royals were 6-0, 6-0 victories from Kade Bishop at No. 5, and Micah Gustafson at No. 6.
Bethel 7, Webster 0 (Box Score)
Carter Sheard/Watson Sheard teamed up for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Eli Scheideman/Ethan Ahrar were victorious 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. Bethel registered a forfeit win at No. 3 doubles.
Kade Bishop prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Ryan Reid won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Zach Bengtson took care of business 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, as did Jacob Merriam 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. BU notched forfeit wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Bethel will face UW-Eau Claire at the Oak Street Community Center in Kissimmee, Florida on Thursday, March 19 at 11:30 a.m. (ET).
