WINONA, Minn. – Bethel University's men's hockey team showed grit and determination Friday night in Winona, battling back from an early deficit before ultimately falling 3-5 to Saint Mary's University (Minn.). The Cardinals struck first in the opening period, taking a 2-0 lead. Opening the second period, the Cardinals scored twice again before the Royals began their comeback effort. Bethel responded in the second period as senior Tyler Braccini converted on the power play at 16:12, drawing the Royals within three, and just over a minute later senior Tyler Kostelecky scored with assists from Luke Lindsay and George Peterson at 17:15, cutting the gap to 2-4.
The third period saw Bethel keep applying pressure, and freshman Ethan Hull added another power-play goal at 9:09 of the final frame, narrowing the deficit to 4-3 and keeping the Royals firmly in striking distance. Throughout the night, Bethel's forwards worked relentlessly forechecking and creating second chances, with contributors up and down the lineup including Lindsay, Spencer Kring, Joe Kelly and Jack Brown. Senior goaltender Austin Ryman stood tall amid heavy traffic, turning aside a steady stream of shots to give Bethel every opportunity to complete the comeback. Despite the momentum and competitive energy in the third, Saint Mary's added another tally late that sealed the 5-3 final.
In the MIAC standings, Saint Mary's sits at the top with 24 points in conference play, followed closely by Gustavus Adolphus, Saint John's and St. Olaf. Bethel is currently in fifth place with 20 points in MIAC competition, reflecting a tightly contested race as the regular season winds down.
