ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex, honoring seniors James Oberholtzer, Edin Nguyen and Nathan Hunt prior to kickoff. The Royals battled Macalester College to a 1-1 draw in MIAC action.
Bethel wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, striking less than four minutes into the match. Roy Kyle found the back of the net in the fourth minute off an assist from Tadeo Magana, giving the Royals an early 1-0 advantage.
The goal marked Kyle's second of the season and helped Bethel establish control in the opening half. The Royals outshot Macalester 6-2 through the first 45 minutes and carried their one-goal advantage into halftime.
Macalester found the equalizer in the 54th minute when Kasdan Blattman scored to even the match at 1-1.
The Royals continued to push forward following the tying goal, generating seven second-half shots and four corner kicks as they searched for the go-ahead goal. Bethel put one second-half attempt on frame but was unable to break the tie before the final whistle.
Bethel finished the afternoon with a 13-6 advantage in total shots, including a 7-4 edge in the second half. The Royals earned five corner kicks while allowing six.
Defensively, Bethel limited Macalester to just three shots on goal and recorded two saves while keeping the Scots from taking the lead.
The draw moves the Royals to 3-8-2 overall and 0-3-2 in MIAC play.
Up Next: Bethel travels to Duluth Tuesday for an MIAC matchup against the College of St. Scholastica. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
