FOND DU LAC, Wis. – In a hard-fought road contest, the Bethel University women's hockey team rallied to earn a 4–2 victory over Marian University in Fond du Lac on January 19. The Royals displayed resilience and balanced scoring as they overcame an early deficit to secure the win.
Bethel struck first in the opening period on a power-play goal from sophomore forward Myla Lubken, with an assist from graduate student Kallie Tibbetts (Abrahamson). The early strike energized the Royals, but Marian responded with two goals in the first frame to take a 2–1 lead into the first intermission.
The Royals regrouped in the second period and knotted the game at 2–2 when senior forward Maddi O'Connor scored a short-handed goal unassisted, giving Bethel new momentum. From that point forward, the Royals controlled much of the play, generating scoring chances and tightening up defensively as the game wore on.
In the third period, Bethel capitalized again on the power play as senior Julia Helget found the back of the net with helpers credited to Siri Olson, Beth Vincent (Velasco), and Olivia Martin to put the Royals ahead, 3–2. The Bethel defense stood tall the rest of the period, protecting the lead with disciplined positioning and smart puck management. With under a minute remaining, Bethel sealed the victory with an empty-net insurance goal from junior forward Malia McKinnon, assisted by Vincent (Velasco) and Martin, capping a complete team effort.
Netminder Ava Brennan was solid between the pipes, making timely saves to preserve the lead once it was established. Bethel's offensive production was spread throughout the lineup, reflecting a balanced and collective effort. Contributors such as Rylen Kissell, Alison Hoerer, Evie Sellner, Afton Hulke, Kristi Baillif, and Trinity Jackson added energy and depth throughout the contest.
Special teams were a clear factor for the Royals, who converted on the power play and capitalized on the pivotal short-handed opportunity in the second period. Bethel's ability to respond after falling behind early illustrated the team's tenacity and determination.
With the victory, Bethel looks to build momentum as it continues its conference slate. The Royals' next test comes on the road against College of St. Scholastica on Friday, January 23 at 6 p.m., followed by a return home to host St. Scholastica on Saturday, January 24 at 4 p.m.
