Sutter Strikes Out a Career High 11 in Royals Sweep of Knights

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — Behind a career-high 11 strikeouts from Max Sutter in game one, the Bethel University baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Carleton Saturday afternoon behind a pair of extra-inning games. The Royals took the opener 3-2 in eight innings and game two 3-1 in nine, to improve to 5-1 in conference and 14-6 overall.
Game one:
Carleton got on the board first in game one on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Bethel answered in the top of the fifth on an Oran Hinkle double to the left-center field gap to tie the game at one.
Max Sutter got the start for the Royals and worked 7.0 innings of one-run baseball, allowing four hits and fanning a career high 11 Carleton batters to earn his first win of the year.
The game remained tied heading into the eighth, when Hayden Sperbeck gave Bethel the lead on an RBI double to the left-center gap.
Andrew Cardenas provided the insurance run on a double down the left field line bringing home Sperbeck to make it a 3-1 game.
Michael Meadows closed things out for the Royals in the ninth, earning his first save of the year in the 3-2 win.
Game two:
Carson Christiansen got things started for the Royals in game two with a line drive single to center to score the game's first run.
Carelton tied it up in the bottom of the first bringing home a run on a 6-4-3 double play.
Roman Lachenmeyer took the hill for the Royals in game two tossing six innings allowing just one earned run and punching out seven Carleton batters coming away with a no decision.
The game remained knotted at one until the top of the ninth. Chris Lavin opened the ninth with a leadoff double past a diving Knights third baseman. A missed flyball by the Knights left fielder allowed Lavin to score the go ahead run.
Aidan Nelson worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen earning his first win of the year, with Jordan Axberg closing it down in the ninth for his first save of the year and a 3-1 Royals win.
Up next:
The Royals now head down Snelling Avenue for an out-of-conference matchup with Northwestern on Tuesday afternoon April 8. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
