ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — The Bethel University baseball team smacked five homers en route to a doubleheader sweep of Macalester Saturday afternoon. In game one, the Royals used a nine-run fifth inning and two home runs by
Xavier Lortie to open up a 12-0 lead going on to win 14-2. In game two, it was a
Joe Meurer three-run blast that was the difference as the Royals won 7-4 to complete the sweep.
With the sweep, the Royals extended their winning streak to 10 games. They are 19-6 overall and 9-1 in conference play.
Game one:
Oran Hinkle led off the bottom of the first with a solo blast inside the right field foul pole, his team-leading fifth home run of the year gave the Royals a 1-0 lead.
The Royals added runs in the second and third to open up a 3-0 lead.
Max Sutter got the start on the mound and tossed five scoreless innings giving up four hits and five to earn his third win of the year.
Xavier Lorite got things started in the fifth with a two-run bomb to right. The Royals eventually batted around plating nine runs on five hits, capped off with Lortie's second roundtripper of the inning, a three-run homer to open a 12-0 lead.
Jordan Krupke drove a pitch to straightaway left for a two-run home run in the sixth, the Royals fourth homer of the game made it a 14-1 game. With the Royals going on to win 14-2.
Game two:
The Scots struck first in game two, plating the game's first run on an RBI single in the top of the first.
Roman Lachenmayer took the hill in game two for the Royals, going six innings, giving up just one earned run and punching out five. Lachenmayer came up with a tough no decision.
The Bethel bats broke through in the sixth, scoring four runs on six hits. Including a two RBI double to over the head of the Macalester by
Andrew Cardenas to make it a 4-1 game.
Macalester struck back, plating one in the seventh and two in the eighth to tie it at four.
Joe Meurer came to the plate with two on and one out in the eighth and drove a 3-2 pitch deep to left for a three-run go-ahead bomb to give the Royals a 7-4 lead.
Michael Meadows pitched a scoreless ninth to put the finishing touches on a 7-4 win and doubleheader sweep.
