KANSAS CITY – The Bethel University baseball team opened its 2025 campaign with a sweep of Crown College Monday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo. The Royals needed 10 innings to get the job done on both ends taking game one 3-1 and game two 5-4.
Â
Game 1: Bethel 3, Crown 1 (10 innings)
In his Bethel debut,
Oran Hinkle capped out a 4-for-5 and multi-RBI day by driving in the eventual game-winning run in the 10th. His single to right scored
Nolan Jurgenson who reached on a one-out double.
Â
Isaac Call provided the insurance run in the 10th scoring Hinkle from second.
Â
The teams went into the sixth scoreless despite the Royals stranding a combined nine runners in that stretch. Hinkle scored the game's first run with his sacrifice fly in the top half of the frame. He'd score
Chris Lavin who got aboard on a hit-by-pitch and moved over to third on back-to-back walks.
Â
The Polars evened it up in the bottom of the frame with a double followed by a single with one away.
Â
Max Sutter got the start on the bump and picked up a no decision despite tossing six innings of work where he gave up the lone run, walked one and struck out four. Out of the pen,
Cavan Banks picked up the win with his four innings of shutout relief.
Â
Game 2: Bethel 5, Crown 4 (10 innings)
Xavier Lortie provided the walk-off RBI single in game two. Joey Meurer notched a two-out walk before moving to second on a wild pitch. Lortie's single to right was enough to bring in Meurer for the game-winning run.
Â
Bethel went up 2-0 with a two-out RBI double from
Jordan Krupke in the first and a two-out RBI single by
Carson Christiansen in the third.
Â
Crown put up a four spot in the top of the sixth to take a lead. Only two of those runs were earned.
Â
BU pulled within one in the seventh as Lorite singled to right, scoring
Andrew Cardenas. They tied it up in the bottom of the ninth as Call drew a bases-loaded walk.
Â
Out of the pen, Micahel Meadows got the win with an inning of shutout relief.
