BLAINE, Minn. –– Bethel women's hockey battled through 65 minutes of tightly contested MIAC action on Friday night at the National Sports Center, skating to a 1–1 tie with Saint Benedict before the Bennies claimed the extra point in the shootout. Despite outshooting the Bennies 42–30 and controlling long stretches of play, the Royals were unable to convert on several prime opportunities, including three power plays.
Saint Benedict struck first on a power-play goal at 16:14 of the opening period, but Bethel's response came in the third. With the Royals pushing the pace, Kallie Tibbetts (Abrahamson) buried the equalizer at 15:11 after a strong feed from Myla Lubken, tying the game at 1–1 and energizing the home bench. Bethel generated 13 shots in the frame and held the Bennies without a goal.
Both teams tightened up defensively in overtime, with Bethel holding a 1–0 edge in shots. Goaltender Ashley Gustafson (Hess) was steady all night, turning away 29 shots and backstopping the Royals through several key penalty kills. Her counterpart, Lexi Badali, kept Saint Benedict alive with a 41-save effort.
In the best-out-of-three shootout, CSB converted once while Bethel was held off the board, giving the Bennies the conference point despite the official NCAA tie result.
The draw moves Bethel to 3–3–1 overall and 1–3–1 in MIAC play.
The Royals are back on the ice Saturday, Dec. 6, traveling to St. Joseph to close out the series against Saint Benedict. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. as Bethel looks to secure the weekend win on the road.
