MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.—The Bethel University men's basketball team had the upper hand in rebounding 41-28 in their 72-64 road loss to Augsburg on Wednesday night.
The Royals fall to 3-5, 1-1 MIAC, while the Auggies improve to 8-1, 3-0 MIAC.
Augsburg 72, Bethel 64
Augsburg's 22-6 advantage in points off turnovers, 41 bench points, 18 forced turnovers, and seven committed turnovers propelled them. The Royals dug themselves out of a 17-point, 25-8 deficit at the 10:44 mark of the opening half with a 33-7 run over the final 10:08. Sam Gingras's 10 points in that run helped cut Bethel's deficit to 32-31 at halftime.
Adam Mattes gave the Royals their first lead of the contest with a jumper at the 18:38 mark of the second frame, which made the score 35-34. Bethel led for the next :49 before Ali Axmed put Augsburg in the driver's seat with a three-pointer that made the score 38-37 with 17:49 on the clock. The Auggies never surrendered that lead en route to a 72-64 win.
Sam Gingras paced Bethel with 16 points, followed by Nick Burke's double double 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jay Neubert came off the bench with 14 points, while Adam Mattes rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points.
BU shot .436 (24-of-55) from the field, while Augsburg finished with a .444 (28-of-63) mark.
The Auggies got 11 points apiece from Isaac Rabaey, Ali Axmed, and Trent Gomez.
The Royals will travel to Martin Luther on Saturday, December 13 at 4 p.m.
