Royals Show Fight in Loss to No. 17 Gustavus

The Bethel University volleyball team battled hard against nationally ranked No. 17 Gustavus Adolphus, but the Gusties' efficiency proved too much as the Royals fell in straight sets (18–25, 21–25, 20–25) Saturday night at the Robertson Center.

In front of a strong home crowd of 416 for Youth Night, Bethel traded points with Gustavus throughout much of the match, keeping each set within striking distance before the visitors pulled away late.

Peyton Howie and Sara Scherber led the Royals' attack with 10 kills apiece, while Hannah Penke added six kills and 12 digs in a strong all-around performance. At the net, Howie tallied five blocks to help slow the Gustavus offense. Setter Sophia Rubio finished with 28 assists and guided a balanced offensive effort, while Olivia Johnson, Grace Therrien, and Penke each led the defense with 12 digs.

As a team, Bethel totaled 31 kills, 6 blocks, and 56 digs, hitting .149 on the night against a Gustavus squad that improved to 18–5 (4–1 MIAC). The Royals move to 9–8 overall and 3–2 in conference play as they continue a tough stretch of MIAC competition.

Bethel now turns its focus to a midweek nonconference matchup at Wartburg College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Waverly, Iowa.
