ST. PETER, Minn. — The Bethel University men's basketball team fell to 5-2 in MIAC play following a 97-78 loss to Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter Saturday afternoon.
The Royals couldn't overcome a 16 point halftime deficit despite a 19 point performance from
Payton Thomsen and a 17 point afternoon from
Adam Mattes.
Adam Mattes drove the lane and finished at the rim to put the Royals up 4-0 early in the first half.
Evan Murray nailed a shot from beyond the arc seven minutes into the first half to give Bethel a 15-13 advantage.
Evan Murray nailed another three pointer to give the Royals an 18-17 lead with 12:37 to play in the half. Before a 18-7 run put the Gusties ahead 35-25. The Gusties held a 54-38 advantage heading into halftime.
Blake Schmitz got the Royals on the board in the second half driving the lane for two to make it 63-40. Schmitz later hit from three to make it a 20-point game, 65-45.
JT Schradle grabbed a defensive board and Adam Matted created a fastbreak opportunity finishing at the rim for a layup.
Payton Thomsen knocked down a three with five minutes to play to make it a 87-67 game.
Myles Thomsen and
Tim Coe closed out the game with a pair of threes for the Royals as they fell to the Gusties, 97-78.
