ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel men's tennis dropped a pair of conference matchups this past weekend falling to St. Scholastica, 5-4, and Carleton, 7-2.
Â
Against the Saints, BU found themselves down 2-1 after doubles and battling warm temperatures, came up just short of a comeback in singles play.
Â
On Sunday, the Royals picked up where they left off against Carleton as their original match had been interrupted by rain. Again, the men saw themselves down 2-1 after doubles, and couldn't make a strong comeback against MIAC-leading Carleton.
Â
How it Happened Against St. Scholastica:
• The No. 3 doubles team
Zack Chaffey and
Brett Eliason came back from a 1-4 deficit, splitting games the next two changeovers. They were able to win 3 more before ultimately losing 4-8.
• Brothers Watson and
Carter Sheard got the Royals on the board with their first and only doubles point. The 2nd doubles team exchanged breaks the entire set, but in the tiebreak, they were able to gain some momentum, taking a 4-1 lead. They then only gave up one more point before closing it out 8-7 (7-2).
• No. 6 singles player
Robert Seaton scored the men their first singles win of the day, beating his opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
• Freshman
Watson Sheard played a close first set at No. 5 singles, going to a tiebreak after over an hour of play. He closed out the set 7-6 (7-2) before falling 1-3 in the second. He then battled back, winning the next 5 games in a row to take the match.
Â
How it Happened Against Carleton:
• No. 1 doubles team of
Dylan Magistad and
Gavin Hutter fought to take their opponents to a tiebreak. They then lost a little momentum in the first half of it before coming back and ultimately taking the set 8-7 (9-7).
• No. 3 singles player
Dylan Magistad got his 11th singles win of the season, defeating Carleton in identical straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
• Freshman
Gavin Hutter dominated the first set, winning 6-3, before taking a huge hit to his serve in the second, causing him to lose 2-6. Then in the third set tiebreaker, he was able to fend off two set points before ultimately dropping the set 6-3, 2-6, 8-10.
• Top singles player
Carter Sheard exchanged leads in some long rallies all throughout the first set. He was finally able to close it out 7-5, but then lost the first three games in the second set and could never make up the difference. He was then forced into a third set tiebreak, in the end falling 7-5, 3-6, 7-10,

Quote from Coach Fernelius
"It was definitely upsetting that we couldn't get those last couple points either day, but they played hard against some solid teams. We have a busy week ahead of us and the guys are wanting to get back out on the courts and get better"
