ST. PAUL, Minn. – Bethel men's tennis achieved its second conference win, besting Hamline University 8-1 Wednesday afternoon. The men pulled ahead 3-0 and managed to close out some tight tiebreak wins in both the singles and doubles draws.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Royals were able to jump out to the 3-0 lead large in part to big victories at the No. 3 and No. 3 doubles spot that each won in a tiebreaker by identical 8-7 (5) scores. It was
Zack Chaffey and
Brett Eliason at No. 3 doubles that really battled going down 0-5 in the tiebreaker before managing seven consecutive points.
• Sophomore
Dylan Magistad completely swept his opponent at No. 3 singles, taking the match 6-0, 6-0 in only 40 minutes
• After exchanging breaks in their first sets, No. 1 singles player
Carter Sheard and 2nd singles
Gavin Hutter both found themselves in a set tiebreak. Hutter quickly swept his opponent 7-2 in the tiebreak, then went on to only drop one game in the second set. Sheard extended his breaker far past seven, until finally taking the hold 10-8. He then didn't drop a game in the second set.
QUOTE FROM COACH FERNELIUS
"The guys brought great energy today and got two huge tiebreak wins at 2nd and 3rd doubles to lead us to the win tonight. Working to get better everyday with some big matches to come after Easter break. Confident that win or lose, this group will give it everything they've got!"
