BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel women's hockey team nabbed a 4-3 overtime victory from the St. Catherine University Wildcats in the first of their weekend series games.
Brynn Swenson's game-winner 1:57 into the overtime helped BU finish with two unanswered goals to claim the victory.
The win brings the Royals to a MIAC record of 6-7-1 – sitting in fifth place with 23 points – and 12-8-1 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Royals burst onto the scoreboard barely two minutes into the first period when
Maddi O'Connor tipped the puck into the Wildcat net off of a shot from defenseman
Dylan Grilz, giving BU an early lead.
• Bethany Velasco built on that lead in a similar fashion as O'Connor, knocking in a shot from defenseman
Lindsey Muntifering just in front of the net at 10:11 during a Royal power-play.
• The Wildcats were able to keep the score close before the first period came to a close, driving the puck over BU goaltender
Anna Hanson's right shoulder with three tenths of a second left.
• St. Kate's continued with its momentum in the second period, scoring two more unanswered goals, the first at 15:50 and the second on a power-play at 17:53. The Royals were only able to post seven shots to the Wildcats' 12 during the period.
• Bethel seized control of the game three minutes into the third period when, fresh off of a penalty kill,
McKayla Machlitt sped down the ice on a breakaway and took on the Wildcat goalie, finishing with the Royals' third and equalizing goal. T
• Though the Wildcats fought to find the advantage, once again outshooting the Royals, the BU defense and Hanson were able to hold down the net, bringing the teams to overtime.
• Swenson made quick work of the overtime period, scoring her seventh goal on a breakaway from the red line just 1:57 in and giving the Royals their second victory over the Wildcats this season.
