Defensive Effort Earns Royals 63-38 Win at St. Olaf in Regular Season Finale

NORTHFIELD Minn. – The Bethel University women's basketball team rounded out its regular season with a 63-38 win at St. Olaf Saturday afternoon.
 
Bethel held the Oles to a 32.6 shooting percentage while going 45.6 percent from the field themselves. BU held a 33-29 edge on the boards and forced St. Olaf into 27 turnovers that converted into 15 points on the other end.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
• The Royals led wire-to-wire against the Oles thanks to a quick offensive start. BU shot 53.3 percent in the opening quarter racing out to a 20-12 lead.
• A 15-2 run for the Royals that started early in the second and ran a stretch of 5:34 extended BU's lead into double digits at 35-18.
• Bethel went into the break up 37-23 after shooting just over 46 percent in the second half.
 
Second Half
• The defense ramped up in the second half where BU outscored St. Olaf 26-15.
• Bethel held the Oles to 3-of-12 from the floor in the third quarter. Meanwhile Elly Schmitz dropped nine points in the quarter herself including a 3-pointer to kick off the second half scoring.
• Garfield converted on another 3-point play with 5:53 left in the fourth giving BU its largest lead of the game at 63-33.
 
KEY PERFORMERS
• Anna Garfield and Elly Schmitz each finished with a game-high 19 points and five rebounds each. Garfield added three assists and four steals.
• Colette Duininck finished with 14 points, three assists and two steals.
 
UP NEXT
Earning the No. 4 seed in the MIAC Playoffs, the Royals host No. 5 seed Saint Benedict on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. Admission to MIAC Playoff games is $10 for adults and $2 for students with ID. Children 5 and under are free and only MIAC passes will be accepted at the gate for free entry.
