The Bethel University women's hockey team secured a gritty 2-0 victory over the College of St. Benedict Bennies in the first game of their weekend series. The win moves the Royals to a record of 3-2-0 in the MIAC and 4-2-1 overall.
How It Happened:
• Despite being outshot in the first period by the Bennies, 12-9, the Royals were the first to break onto the scoreboard at 4:41.
Kallie Abrahamson stole the puck off a Bennie attacker's stick, skated it the length of the ice, and rocketed off a shot. Her linemate
Abbie DeLong was there to bury the puck after it rebounded off of the Bennie goaltender to make it 1-0, Royals.
• The Bennies put up even more of an offensive fight in the second period, notching 14 shots against BU goaltender
Anna Hanson, but the Royals' defense held fast.
Emily Wiltse snatched up the puck in the neutral zone and, rushing into the offensive zone, fired off a shot.
Brynn Swenson recovered the rebound and passed it back out to
Sydney Eckert, whose deflected shot gave Swenson the chance to knock the puck into the net as it ricocheted around the crease. 2-0, Royals.
• The Royals faced intense pressure from the Bennies in the third period as they sought to find a goal of their own, but the Royals' defense and Hanson's 46 saves kept CSB from finding the back of the net.
What's Next:
The Royals will host the Bennies in the second matchup of the weekend tomorrow night on their home ice at the Blaine Super Rink. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
