The Bethel women's hockey team defeated the St. Catherine University Wildcats, 2-1, in a tight first MIAC matchup of the season. The victory moves the Royals to a record of 2-0-1 and 1-0-0 in the MIAC.
How It Happened:
• The first period saw the Royals narrowly edge out the Wildcats in shots, 8-7, but it was the Wildcats who got on the board first, scoring just four minutes into the first period.
• But the Royals answered back on the power play just minutes later.
Sydney Eckert set up
Jace Zapata, who scored her first goal of the season, flinging the puck from the right side of the zone towards the far left side of the net for a post-in goal.
• The second period saw Bethel continue to dominate St. Kate's, outshooting them 10-4, but neither team could find a leading goal.
•
Brynn Swenson put the Royals on top once again after
Emily Wiltse laid off the puck for her in the Wildcats' zone. Swenson walked it in and flicked it past the goaltender to give BU a 2-1 lead at 1:01 in the third period.
What's Next:
The Royals will return to their home ice at the Blaine Super Rink tomorrow, Sat. 16, for the second matchup in the series against St. Kate's. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
