WINONA, Minn. – The Bethel men's hockey team suffered a harsh overtime loss to the Saint Mary's Cardinals Friday evening. The Cardinals snatched the extra point in the standings out of the MIAC-leading Royals' hands with less than a minute of overtime play, 2-1.
The loss brings the Royals to a MIAC record of 6-3-2 and an overall record of 12-5-3. BU is now tied with Augsburg atop the MIAC standings with 21 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first period was anyone's game until 15:29 when
Jake Herter skated the puck up to the Cardinal net and flicked a backdoor pass over to
Ben Doherty, who knocked the puck in for a clean first goal of the game.
• Saint Mary's showed that they weren't willing to give up an early lead just two minutes later, catching Royal netminder
Austin Ryman out of position and driving home a one-timer.
• The second period saw the Royals deepen their shots-on-goal lead, 22-17, as both teams fought for a point advantage. But neither the second or third period yielded a game-deciding goal, and the teams headed to overtime.
• Just 50 seconds into the overtime period, Saint Mary's dealt Bethel a fatal blow as they converted a rebounded shot into a sudden death goal, claiming an underdog victory over the Royals.
