NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The red-hot Bethel University baseball team continued their winning ways Monday afternoon with two wins (13-9, 13-4) over Carleton College. The wins move the Royals to 20-4 (12-0) on the season.Â
Noah Wenberg had himself a day at the plate, with seven hits and five RBIs.Â
The winning pitchers on the day were
Ryan Parker and
Jordan Krupke with Parker starting game one going 4.2 innings with two earned runs and two strikeouts and Krupke coming in for relief in game two, throwing five shutout innings with six strikeouts.Â
Game 1 | Bethel 13, Carleton 9
Bethel fell in a hole early in this one, with Carleton scoring two runs in the bottom of the first but the Royals quickly took the lead in the top of the second, scoring three runs off of a Noah Wenberg RBI single to left, a Marcus Krupke RBI single to right, and a Matthew Carlsen RBI triple to right to put the Royals up 3-2.
Bethel started to run away with this game in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs in the inning with Noah Wenberg, Tommy Friesen, and Nick Kulseth all picking up RBIs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Kulseth to put the Royals up 9-2.
Carleton made the Royals nervous in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs wot cut the lead to 9-6 but Bethel answered immediately again in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs off of a Marcus Krupke two-RBI double to right and another run scoring on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 12-6.
Carleton continued their comeback effort in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three times and cutting the lead to 12-9.
The Royals added an insurance run that they would not end up needing in the top of the seventh when Nolan Jurgenson stole home and put the Royals up 13-9.
Blake Williams shut out the Knights on the mound in the bottom of the seventh and secured the 13-9 victory for the Royals.
Game 2 | Bethel 13, Carleton 4
Bethel found themselves down early in this one, with Carleton scoring twice in
the bottom of the first to go up 2-0.
This score held for a while before the Royals exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth with Nick Kulseth, Noah Wenberg, Marcus Krupke, Matthew Carlsen, Tommy Friesen, and Keenan Hodgkin each picking up an RBI in the inning to put the Royals up 6-2.
The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4 but the Royals stopped their momentum in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs from a Keenan Hodgkin RBI double to center, Hodgkin scoring on a wild pitch, and a Noah Wenberg 2-RBI double to left to put the Royals up 10-4.
The Royals added three more runs in the top of the eighth with a Nick Kulseth RBI double to right, another wild pitch bringing in a run, and a Nolan Jurgenson RBI groundout to put the Royals up 13-4, which would end up being the final score of this one.
