Royals Lose for First Time in MIAC Play

Collegeville, Minn. - The Bethel University baseball team dropped both matchups (3-11, 10-11) to St. John's Wednesday evening. The losses move the Royals to 20-6 (12-2) on the season.

Bethel pitching had a rough day, giving up 22 runs to the Johnnies with both Marcus Krupke and Blake Williams taking their first losses of the season.

Game 1 | Bethel 3, St. John's 11

Bethel found themselves in a deep hole early in this one when the Johnnies scored six runs in the bottom of the second innings off Bethel pitcher Marcus Krupke.

St. John's scored four more runs in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth and the Royals quickly found themselves in an 11-0 hole.

The Royals got on the board in the top of the fifth after Matthew Carlsen hit an RBI single to center and Justin Winterfeldt hit a double down the left-field line to score two runs and cut the deficit to 11-3.

This comeback effort proved to be much too little too late as this score would hold for the remainder of the game.

Marcus Krupke took his first loss on the season, moving him to 3-1.

Game 2 | Bethel 10, St. John's 11

Bethel got on the board first in game number two when Ty Koehn hit a single to right field in the top of the first to put the Royals up 2-0.

St. John's answered immediately, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and four runs in the bottom of the second to go up 6-2, but Bethel responded with six runs in the top of the third coming from a Justin Winterfeldt solo homer to left-center field, a Nick Kulseth sacrifice fly, a Noah Wenberg RBI single up the middle, a Marcus Krupke two-run double to left center, and a Tommy Friesen sacrifice fly to put the Royals up 8-6.

Bethel added to their lead in the top of the sixth when Matthew Carlsen scored on a throwing error by the St. John's third baseman and Ty Koehn hit a sacrifice fly to left to put the Royals up 10-6.

The Royals saw their lead disappear in the bottom of the tenth when the Johnnies exploded for five runs to go up 11-10 on the Royals, which would be the final score of this game.

Blake Williams took the loss on the mound for the Royals to move him to 0-1.
