Arden Hills, Minn. - The Bethel University baseball team earned two decisive victories over the Macalester College Scots, 7-0 and 12-1, on Sunday afternoon at Hargis Park. The wins move the Royals to 18-4 on the season and 10-0 in MIAC play
Backed by a balanced offense, both Bethel starting pitchers had impressive days with Ty Koehn throwing five shutout innings in game one and John Solfest throwing six innings of one-run ball game and seven strikeouts in game number two.
Game 1 | Bethel 7, Macalester 0
The Royals got on the board first in this one when
Keenan Hodgkin stoked a solid RBI single up the middle between the shortstop and second baseman in the bottom of the first inning to put the Royals up 1-0.Â
Bethel added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after some clutch two-out hitting.
Tommy Friesen laced an opposite-field RBI single to left and
Justin Winterfeldt drove in two more runs with a scorching RBI single to left to put the Royals up 4-0.Â
This game was broken wide open in the bottom of the fifth when
Marcus Krupke crushed a three-run home run to right field to put the Royals up 7-0.Â
Macalester could not find any offense in the rest of the game, getting shut out by the pitching trio of
Ty Koehn,
Aidan Nelson, and
Nick Carlson. Koehn picked up his third win on the season, throwing five shutout innings with one walk and five strikeouts.Â
Game 2 | Bethel 12, Macalester 1 // 8 innings
Bethel struck first again in the second game of the day in the bottom of the second inning when Matt Friesen hit a sacrifice fly to center and Matthew Carlsen stroked a solid two-RBI single to right to put the Royals up 3-0.
The Scots scored their first run of the day in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 3-1 but the Royals didn't let Macalester's momentum last long as they struck back in the bottom of the third when
Jordan Krupke smoked a bases clearing three-RBI double down the left field line and
Matt Friesen blooped an RBI single into short right field to put the Royals up 7-1.
Bethel ended this game in the bottom of the eight inning, scoring five runs after a Marcus Krukpe RBI single, a
Matthew Carlsen sacrifice fly, and a
Sam Johnson three-run home run to right to put the Royals up 12-1 and end the game due to the 10 run mercy rule.Â
