NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Bethel University men's basketball team gave MIAC-leading Carleton everything they had coming up just short in a conference road contest inside West Gym, 86-81.

Avery Mast knocked down his fifth three of the game with 6.7 remaining pulling BU 84-81. Out of a BU timeout, Carleton was forced to call a timeout after troubles inbounding it. The Knights were able to get it in the second time and being sent to the line where they hit both free throws making it a five-point game and effectively out of reach.

Bethel (9-13, 7-10 MIAC) finished 46.3 percent from the floor and 29.6 from three. Carleton (18-3, 13-3 MIAC) went 48.3 percent from the field and were 40 percent behind the arc. BU dominated the points in the paint holding a 44-32 edge.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
• The Royals jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first five minutes, that large in part to a pair of threes from Mast that set the tone early.
• An 11-0 run by Carleton helped the Knights take a 35-22 lead with 6:39 to go.
• Following a Bethel timeout, the Royals went on a 14-1 run over a four-minute stretch evening it up at 36-36 with under three to go.
• Both teams shot an even 50 percent from the field each going 17-of-34 with the only difference being Carleton leading 44-40 at the break.

Second Half
• The second half featured just as much offense with four lead changes and nine ties.
• Thanks to some free throws and a three from Mast, BU took a brief lead midway through.
• Carleton went into the bonus with 8:39 to go and could do most of its scoring with the clock not running, they finished the half 16-of-19 from the line.
• BU's largest deficit of the half came at 79-72 with 3:54 to go. A pair of free throws by Kidder got them within 79-77 with 1:29 to go, but the Royals could get no closer than that.

KEY PERFORMERS
•
Zach Doely tallied a team-high 27 points on 13-of-17 shooting to go along with seven rebounds.
• Mast finished with 18 points, two shy of matching a career high, going 6-of-14 from the field and 5-of-12 behind the arc.
•
Payton Thomsen finished with 14 points and six rebounds while
Joey Kidder chipped in 11 points and seven boards.
