Strong Third Leads Bethel Women’s Basketball to 61-44 Road Win at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A strong third quarter where the Bethel University women's basketball team outscored Macalester 19-2, led them to a 61-44 victory over the Scots Monday evening in St. Paul.

Bethel's defense held the Scots to 1-of-17 shooting in the third while having its best 10-minute performance of the night at 58.3 percent.

From the charity stripe BU finished a perfect 12-for-12.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
• A fairly even opening quarter saw a scoring drought of nearly three minutes midway through for both teams. But an early gritty defensive effort saw the Royals lead 11-8 after one.
• The Scots opens the second a 7-0 run taking a four point lead. A three from Alli Born followed by a steal and a bucket from Elly Schmitz return the lead to BU.
• Bethel's lead got as big as eight until a scoring drought allowed Macalester to tie it late in the second with free throws.
Anna Garfield hit a pair at the stripe with seven seconds sending the Royals into the break up 27-26.
 
Second Half
• A 16-0 run to open up the half saw them not surrender a field goal to the Scots until 1:54 left in the third.
• An offensive pu tback by Garfield with 8:21 to go gave Bethel its largest lead of the night at 51-30.
 
KEY PERFORMERS
Elly Schmitz led the way with a game- and career-high 17 points to go along with seven boards. She also added five steals and three blocks.
Anna Garfield finished with 14 points while going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
Alli Born had a career-high nine boards to go along with three assists.
 
UP NEXT
The Royals stay on the road traveling to St. Catherine, Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
