Concordia Takes Defensive Battle from Royals

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – A tough shooting night for the Bethel University men's basketball team, shooting a season-low 29.3 percent – resulted in a 57-52 loss at home to Concordia Saturday afternoon.
 
On the other end of the court, the Cobbers shot 40 percent while both teams combined for 30 turnovers. BU out rebounded CC 42-31 and had 16 offensive boards that turned into 13 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
• A closely contested opening seven minutes saw both teams struggle to lift the lid off the hoop. Nick Burke knocked down his first three of the night with 12:36 to go in the opening half giving BU a 10-9 advantage.
• Over the next four minutes, BU limited their scoring to one free throw but only found themselves down five.
Adam Mattes tallied Bethel's final two buckets of half on layups before a 3-pointer from the Cobbers sent the Royals into the break down 29-18.
 
Second Half
• The Royals opened the second half on a 14-2 run capped off by a Burke three, taking back the lead at 32-31 with 15:31 to go.
• A 7-0 run for the Cobbers gave its final lead change. Concordia's lead grew to double digits briefly with under five minutes to go.
• With 1:42 to go Peyton Thomsen knocked down a trey after a steal by Zacy Doely pulling BU within 53-47.
• BU went without a bucket until 20 seconds remaining but free throws from the Cobbers put it out of reach.
 
KEY PERFORMERS
Nick Burke led the Royals scoring with 13 points including three makes from behind the arc.
Zach Doely registered his third straight double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Payton Thomsen finished with 10 points and was 4-of-6 from the free throw line.

Bethel returns to the Robertson Center Monday, Dec. 4 hosting Macalseter at 7 p.m.
