NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Bethel men's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with St. Olaf in the series finale Saturday evening in Northfield. The Royals gained the extra point in the MIAC standings winning the shootout.
BU took four of the six possible points in the series moving to 3-0-1 on the year and 1-0-1 in the MIAC.
How It Happened
• The first period, though scoreless, was dominated by the Oles, who posted 13 shots on goal to the Royals 5. Bethel's penalty kill unit had to go to work late in the period including skating 5-on-3 for a stretch, but St. Olaf was unable to find the back of the Bethel net tended by
Travis Allen.
• Each team had a power play opportunity early but were to no avail.
• The Royals finally broke through on the scoreboard as
Adam Bricker carried the puck up the left side and setting
Luke Posner up for a slick back side goal, putting the Royals up, 1-0 9:41 into the period.
• Bethel had two more chances on the man advantage to extend the lead but couldn't come up with a shot. The Penalty kill went to work one more time for the night fending off the Oles fourth power play of the night and sending BU up one into the second intermission.
• The Oles responded with six minutes left in the third period, snatching the puck away right in front of the Royal net and flicking it past Allen for their first goal of the game.
• For the second night in a row the teams went into a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime, but unlike Friday it yielded no result for the game to officially go down as a tie.
• Allen, who made 29 saves, held the Royals' net, making four critical shootout saves.
Jack Brown scored on the Royals' fourth shootout chance with Allen following it up with a save earning BU the extra point.
What's Next
Bethel travels to Superior, Wis., next Friday, Nov. 10, taking on the University of Wisconsin-Superior with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
